Flag Cake Facts

  1. To help my children understand the symbolism of the American flag, we decorated a 9-by-13-inch cake together. First, we frosted it with white frosting.

  2. For the blue rectangle, we used blueberries. I explained that the color blue on the flag represents justice, which means standing up for what is right.

  3. As we placed white chocolate chips over the blueberries to make the stars, I talked about how they represent the 50 states and how the flag started with only 13 stars.

  4. Then red raspberries helped define the red and white stripes that represent the original 13 colonies – especially the courage of our soldiers – and the white stands for purity.

As we finished, I emphasized that the American ideal of freedom applies to everyone – whether you're a boy or a girl, what country your relatives came from or the color of your skin. We are all free and equal under the law.

A lot of questions, conversation and laughter took place throughout this activity, but the best was yet to come. We ate the dessert together after offering thanks to our Lord for "the land of the free and the home of the brave."
